Call for Applications // Data to Motivate Synthesis in the Food-Energy-Water Nexus
SESYNC has developed a platform and a facilitated process oriented around data discovery to motivate synthesis research in the food-energy-water (FEW) nexus. The Data to Motivate Synthesis (DTMS) platform supports exploration of publicly available social and natural system data that characterize FEW systems in the United States context. The DTMS platform consists of empirical and conceptual metadata for each data source and the measurements within it, and a web interface that allows users to identify and connect data through several types of visualizations. The DTMS facilitated process supports the formation of interdisciplinary teams through data exploration and discovery, with the goal of catalyzing data-driven FEW nexus research.
February 2019 workshop
We invite individuals who have a demonstrated interest in both interdisciplinary and team science approaches, as well as FEW nexus topics, to apply to participate in this three-day workshop, held at the SESYNC office in Annapolis, MD on February 11-13, 2019. All travel, lodging and food costs associated with participation in the workshop will be covered by SESYNC. We will invite a diverse group of participants who are engaged in the emerging FEW nexus research community, and who will bring to the workshop and potential collaborative teams a broad range of knowledge, skills and expertise. Applicants must have completed their PhD, and we encourage applicants working in a broad range of organizations, including agencies, NGOs and the private sector.
The goals of the workshop are two-fold: 1) to provide the tools and the intellectual space for data exploration and discovery, as well as facilitated conversation to enhance interdisciplinary understanding and engagement; and 2) to catalyze new research questions, collaborations and proposals. Teams of participants will be encouraged to submit proposals for FEW nexus Pursuit projects for a special SESYNC RFP in May 2019, which will be open only to workshop participants. Pursuits are two-year, team science synthesis research projects that allow PIs to pull together diverse working groups to answer complex questions. The DTMS platform and process will be available to these groups throughout the duration of funded projects.
