NEXUS Gains // Learning resources for water–energy–food–ecosystems (WEFE) nexus capacity development
A suite of learning resources to support capacity development on the WEFE nexus for a wide range of actors. The contents focuses on technical as well as social considerations of managing the WEFE nexus, from modeling to equity and inclusion.
Water, energy, food, and the ecosystems that sustain these are intrinsically linked. Therefore, the water-energy-food-ecosystems (WEFE) nexus approach provides an avenue for the integrated management of related resources and their coordinated governance across sectors and scales. Yet practical implementation of the approach requires capacities that are often lacking in the traditionally siloed WEFE sectors.
The CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains has developed a suite of learning resources to support capacity development in this area. The materials are tailored to the needs of a wide range of actors – researchers, students, professionals, decision-makers, and policymakers – working in WEFE sectors. The contents focuses on technical as well as social considerations of managing the WEFE nexus, from modeling to equity and inclusion. Follow the links below to explore all of the available resources.

Training and courses
WEFE Nexus Approaches
This course series was developed at the Center for Water Resources Studies (CWRS), Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, to bring WEFE nexus approaches to multiple categories of learners in any country.
Professional course for early to mid-career professionals
This professional course is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of WEFE nexus approaches for sustainable resource management. Through the course, professionals learn about trends in natural resource availability and demand, the principles of nexus thinking, and how to develop integrated solutions across sectors to address sustainability challenges.
Academic course for postgraduate students
This course serves as a learning resource for postgraduate students on the WEFE nexus, with a focus on its relevance to the critical issues of climate change and water security. Through the course, students gain an understanding of how the interconnected management of WEFE resources can promote sustainable development by identifying synergies, trade-offs, and efficient use across different sectors and scales.
Sensitization course for policymakers
This presentation is designed as a sensitization course for policymakers and decision-makers to foster integrated management of WEFE resources. Through it, this audience will learn about trends in resource use, the principles of the WEFE nexus approach, and how to translate nexus thinking into policies and practices that promote sustainable and equitable resource management.
WEFE nexus masterclass and advanced schools
These capacity building initiatives were developed to support early career researchers, postgraduate students, managers, and practitioners to understand nexus thinking as a transformative approach to sustainable natural resources management and socioeconomic development.
WEF nexus masterclass: Conceptual understanding of WEF nexus
This online masterclass presentation provides a deep conceptual look at the water–energy–food systems (WEF) nexus, offering professionals a full understanding of the interconnectedness of these three sectors, the synergies and trade-offs that arise when managing them, and how the nexus approach can form a holistic framework for sustainable development.
WEF nexus advanced school: Trade-offs and synergies
This advanced course presentation is designed to help professionals and researchers explore trade-offs and synergies in the WEFE nexus. Learners are introduced to integrated tools and approaches to analyze WEFE interdependencies, identify efficient strategies for resource management, and address challenges in optimizing sector interactions under climate crises and resource scarcity.
WEFE approaches for Central Asia
This collection includes all the training materials from an in-person advanced international summer school on the WEFE nexus in Central Asia, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2023. The presentations, ‘Sustainability assessment of the WEFE nexus for irrigated agriculture: Interdisciplinary approaches for Central Asia’, are also available in Russian.

Gender equity and social inclusion in the WEFE nexus: Frameworks and tools for moving from resource-centric to people-centric WEFE nexus approaches
A learning module introducing frameworks and tools that policymakers, practitioners, and students can use to explain the importance of gender and inclusion to sustainable development outcomes in the WEFE nexus, recognize common challenges and issues, and better address these.
Social learning in situations of complexity: Guidelines for fostering communities of practice
One way that actors can share experiences and knowledge about what works for a collective goal is through engaging in Communities of Practice. These guidelines address how to establish and sustain Communities of Practice for sustainable development in agriculture and natural resources management.
Power Walk activity: A tool adapted for the water sector
The Power Walk is a group role-playing exercise designed to prompt reflection on power dynamics, privilege, and social inequalities, adapted for the water sector context. The activity simulates a society where individuals have an equal starting point but depending on their social identities end up in different positions. The game is meant to convey gender equality and social inclusion concepts in the water sector.
Nexus Capacity Scorecard
This scorecard supports the self-assessment of institutional processes, readiness, and capacities in relation to WEFE approaches. The purpose is to identify opportunities, possible gaps, and inform the planning of tailored WEFE nexus capacity-building efforts, programs, and interventions, and/or their monitoring over time. The scorecard can also be used as a launchpad for discussions, within and across organizations and sectors, for improving WEFE nexus practice and collaboration.
Nexus Capacity Scorecard – Education and research
This version of the scorecard is intended to gauge capacities to adopt a WEFE nexus approach within and/or across academic institutions conducting research in or teaching courses related to the WEFE sectors. The purpose is to identify opportunities, possible gaps, and inform the planning of tailored WEFE nexus courses and research, and/or their monitoring over time.
