Water for Food International Forum // Farmer-led irrigated agriculture: Seeds of opportunity
Smallholder agriculture is the predominant form of farming in much of the developing world, yet production falls far short of potential due to a lack of access and rights to water for irrigation, flexible financing, technology, linkages to markets, and the capacity to manage production.
Irrigation in agriculture has tremendous potential to increase crop yields, support crop and livestock value chains, create livelihoods and reduce poverty and improve health in rural sub-Saharan Africa and part of Asia. This forum will focus on improving water and food security, and livelihoods for smallholder farmers in developing countries by intensifying and expanding sustainable irrigated agriculture. Presenters and participants will explore the investments needed and the necessary enabling environment for enhanced agricultural production, including strong partnerships, linkages to markets support, capacity and technical training, and the role of the private and public sectors.
