Event // Upscaling the WEF Nexus for a Climate Resilient Future

The event aims to address the barriers and opportunities to upscaling water and energy efficient technologies in the agriculture sector in the MENA region by highlighting existing solutions through an Egyptian case study as well as discussing the different enabling factors that are needed for their wider usage.

About the Event

Water, energy and food security are inextricably linked in the Arab region. This strong interdependency calls for the Nexus approach and thinking when addressing the management of natural resources; an approach that promotes cross-sector coordination and alignment aiming at reducing trade-offs and maximizing synergies as stipulated in the Arab Strategic Framework for Sustainable Development (ASFSD), adopted by the League of Arab States in 2013.

One way the WEF Nexus approach is applied in practice is through integrated solutions in the agricultural sector, thereby rendering water and energy consumption more efficient in agricultural production methods. Many integrated solutions (such as solar-powered irrigation pumps, integrated greenhouse systems etc) are known and already applied in the region albeit still largely at pilot level. In order to ensure that these technologies are applied at scale, we need appropriate policy, legislative and economic tools and frameworks in place.

Objective of the event

This session aims to address the barriers and opportunities to upscaling water and energy efficient technologies in the agriculture sector in the MENA region by highlighting existing solutions through an Egyptian case study as well as discussing the different enabling factors that are needed for their wider usage.

In other words, in this session, we would like to focus on how water and energy secure food supply and nutrition. We therefore aim to discuss the following points:

  • What does it take to upscale successful nexus models? How can we help small and medium farmers invest in replicating successful models?
  • What do farmers need in order to replicate water-energy-food driven nexus approaches? How can decision-makers respond to these needs?
  • What might be succesful financing models to help upscale water-energy-food nexus solutions? How can we enhance farmer access to these programs?

The Nexus Regional Dialogues programme – NRD (co-financed by the German Government and the EU and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit - GIZ) are happy to host a panel discussion involving high-level representatives from the agricultural, energy and water sector in the region, including the Regional Centre for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (RCREE), the Arab Organisation for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) as well as the representatives from civil society and the farming community in Egypt.
