This multi-stakeholder dialogue built upon the strong policy messages and momentum established with a growing coalition of global partners during SIWI World Water Week in Stockholm (2016) and XVI World Water Congress in Cancun (2017), which paved the way to Brasilia 2018. The session at WWF8 focused on water for sustainable development, water for energy, water for food, governance, financing and communications. A primary objective of the session was to prepare a policy brief for the High Level Political Form (July 2018). The brief will include a list of recommendations for moving forward with the implementation of the SDGs.

The main session objectives were are follows:

  1. Share WEF Nexus lessons learned across scales and sectors toward implementation of the SDGs;
  2. Facilitate dialogue about the role of WEF Nexus in SDGs implementation between the stakeholders: funding agencies, banks, academics, private and public sectors, technology providers, entrepreneurs and civil society;
  3. Discuss ways to improve policy coherence across WEF sectors and scales.

Many critical questions were addressed, including: How might scientific tools, technology, data and case studies contribute coherence to WEF systems and SDGs implementation? What policies and incentives are needed to promote the implementation of SDGs in the context of WEF systems? What are some successful, cross-scale governance and technological lessons learned in the WEF nexus implementation?

Session co-organisers included the following: Texas A&M University, International Food Policy Research Institute, Global Water Partnership, OCP Policy Center, International Water Management Institute, World Wildlife Fund, International Union for Conservation on Nature, Stockholm Environment Institute, The World Bank, Asian Development Bank, World Water Council, International Water Resources Association, Global Environmental Facility, Water Foundry, Circle of Blue, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), UNU Flores, The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute (DWFI) at the University of Nebraska, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO), International Water Association(IWA), The Joint Programming Initiative (Water JPI) and the American University of Beirut (AUB).

The results and findings of the special session on Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus and SDGs Implementation will be published in a full policy brief in preparation for the UN High-Level Political Forum 2018. The full document will be accessible on the Nexus Resource Platform.
