Training Workshop // Introduction of WEF Nexus Approach and Identification of Nexus Opportunities in Sudan

Sudan, referred to as the “food basket” of the Arab region during the 1970s, today depends on food imports and faces increasing energy, food and water resource demands and pressures. This WEF Nexus workshop will train participants on better understanding and assessing the complex WEF Nexus interconnections and teach them to operationalise and implement WEF Nexus strategies. Implemented by GIZ and jointly funded by BMZ and EU, human capacity development is one of the main pillars of the Nexus Regional Dialogue Programme (NRD) in the MENA region.

The NRD Programme aims to strengthen processes that are necessary for meeting increasing water, energy and food security demands in a sustainable way. High-level regional policy discourse promotes a fully integrated Nexus approach, including stronger multi-level and cross-sectoral cooperation in decision making processes. In addition to fostering green development in the region, the Nexus approach - in line with the Sustainable Development Goals - tackles global challenges such as climate change and the increasing degradation of ecosystems and land.

In light of the increasing WEF insecurities and conflicts over natural resources in Sudan, the Nexus approach - through increased resource efficiency and considering close interlinkages between the water, agriculture and energy sectors - decreases negative externalities while enhancing human security and sustainable development. The Nexus approach can also provide an analytical framework for the improved coordination and coherence of policies and strategies for the integrated management of natural resources.

Knowledge of the Nexus concept and information management are essential for bringing the Nexus debate from the academic sphere into development practice; thus, supporting regional stakeholders in implementing the Nexus approach at the national and regional policy levels is key.

On the basis of interest expressed by the Sudanese Ministry of Water and Energy, the NRD in MENA is organising a Nexus training workshop in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and other key entities including the International Food Policy Institute (IFPRI), Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, and the University of Khartoum.

In addition to introducing the water-energy-food security Nexus approach, the training workshop will identify specific WEF Nexus challenges in Sudan, providing an understanding of the complex Nexus interconnections and introducing different tools and methodologies to assess, operationalise and implement WEF Nexus strategies.
