We are pleased to announce that the next Cracking the Nut conference will take place online over November 15-18, 2021. This 4 half-day learning event will highlight how systems can be designed, adapted, and reinforced to ensure regular access to food, water, and energy for rural populations in developing countries, and how public and private sector initiatives can work at the nexus of food, water, and energy to stimulate rural and agricultural development. This topic is particularly important given the negative impacts of the COVID pandemic and climate change in countries with growing populations and food insecurity. By focusing on how to make systems more resilient, this event will convene leading experts in rural development, sustainable agriculture, water sanitation, clean energy, finance, and investment, including representatives from the private sector, governments, donors, and development implementers. As always, the conference has engaged an Advisory Committee, including agents of change in agricultural development, water, energy, and finance, who are helping us to identify interesting speakers and participate in a competitive selection of presenters for break‐out sessions.
Cracking the Nut 2021 will provide a demand‐driven, collaborative learning space where participants share experiences and best practices on innovative approaches to expand food production, manage water resources, and generate clean energy in ways that increase rural incomes and improve equitable access to sustainable sources of food, water, and energy. This will include methodologies, strategies, and tools; networks for partnership and coordinated collaboration; and insights into the opportunities and threats impacting food, water, and energy systems today. This event will bring together approximately 300 of the world’s relevant stakeholders to discuss “tough nuts” related to building resilient systems, including the themes below.
Applying Technology and Digital Solutions:
What technologies and innovative approaches can help to facilitate the building or strengthening of food, water, and energy systems? How can we measure and prove that a system is more resilient? To what extent do these solutions need to be adapted to local cultures and contexts and for remote oversight? How do we scale them up to also be cost-effective?
Leveraging Private Sector and Multi-Stakeholder Investments:
How can we attract the private sector to participate and invest in food, water and energy systems? What types of platforms are effective in organizing and coordinating multiple stakeholders? How can we mitigate risk and align incentives with market signals? What investment mechanisms and approaches to public financial management are needed to create the infrastructure of a resilient system?
Ensuring Inclusion of Vulnerable Populations:
In designing and adapting systems, how can we ensure the participation of women, youth, and disabled populations from being excluded from decision-making and benefits? What tools and services can be used to address inequalities and improve access for the rural poor, including for smallholder farmers? How do expanding cities add stress to food, water, and energy systems? And what can be done to alleviate that stress?
