Research and Technology

This project which is funded by the European Union aims to bring emission-free plant and fish breeding from research to market.

The aquaponics system for (nearly) emission free tomato- and fish production in greenhouses, abbreviated “ASTAF-PRO”, provides ideal growth conditions for both fishes and vegetables at the same time – a challenge that traditional aquaponics systems cannot overcome. “ASTAF-PRO” is ASTAF-PRO is the technological basis for INAPRO, the “Innovative model & demonstration based water management for resource efficiency in integrated multitrophic agriculture and aquaculture systems”. It aims at achieving a real breakthrough towards implementation and commercialization of this technology

Case study

Mauritius has recently developed a remarkable tourist and financial sector. Nevertheless the agricultural sector is still strong: The sugarcane production uses a considerable part of the water resources. This case study focusses on the options of reaching food and energy sufficiency on Mauritius by changes in the agricultural sector.

About

During the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference, twelve “Nexus Solutions in Practice” sessions demonstrated how a Nexus perspective is already being applied through a series of practical solutions from around the world and at different levels of application. These sessions brought the Nexus to life, helped to keep the conference discussions on a practical level and inspired conference participants to move to concrete action following the conference.

On the Water, Energy & Food Security NEXUS Resource Platform, the collection of practical solutions has become a major section. New best practice examples will be included.

The link between energy and water greatly impacts the food sector, the EDF says. Stakeholders are increasingly talking about the energy-water-food nexus and how to manage growing populations and the demand on all three resources, the organization says. The EDF recommends creating a systematic approach to solve the interconnected issues the link energy, water, food and climate change. The EDF points to a declaration submitted to the Secretary-General of the United Nations by 300 delegates from 33 countries centers on the idea that Earth and the communities that live on it are part of a system.

Science Unstained

The event Smart Solutions for 2050: “Water, Food, Energy, Climate” was sponsored by Shell. The blogger debates the inpact of this fact on the event itself, as this is the topic of the blog: “We think the public discussion of science and technology should be kept public. We appreciate that private funding is a big part of science, but it doesn’t have to frame public debate about it.”

Countercurrents

It is our common sense that water and the human life are inextricably linked. Water is part and parcel of all the aspects of human life: health, food production, economic vitality, etc. In a country like Sri Lanka, still we are rich with a good number of water sources. But Sri Lanka has been facing hardships in recent years due to changes of rain patterns, a result of the climate change.

United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC)

Sri Lanka is highly dependant on hydro-generation for much of its power needs. Nearly 50 percent of the country’s power is water-based. With the continued drought, power prices are likely to increase as only 13 percent of the country’s power needs are being met. The poorer sections of the country are likely to be hit hardest, as the government is forced to import oil to meet power needs. The water shortages in the past have slowed down economic growth for the water dependant isle.

Strengthening cross-border cooperation for water, energy and food security in transboundary basins during a time of climate change lies at the heart of a conference that is being held in Ho Chi Minh City on April 2 and 3.
