Research and Technology

This project which is funded by the European Union aims to bring emission-free plant and fish breeding from research to market.

The aquaponics system for (nearly) emission free tomato- and fish production in greenhouses, abbreviated “ASTAF-PRO”, provides ideal growth conditions for both fishes and vegetables at the same time – a challenge that traditional aquaponics systems cannot overcome. “ASTAF-PRO” is ASTAF-PRO is the technological basis for INAPRO, the “Innovative model & demonstration based water management for resource efficiency in integrated multitrophic agriculture and aquaculture systems”. It aims at achieving a real breakthrough towards implementation and commercialization of this technology

Case study

Mauritius has recently developed a remarkable tourist and financial sector. Nevertheless the agricultural sector is still strong: The sugarcane production uses a considerable part of the water resources. This case study focusses on the options of reaching food and energy sufficiency on Mauritius by changes in the agricultural sector.

Case study

South Africa is still not fully electrified - the gouvernement just had to push this target to 2025. At the same time, the country is among the “Top 10” with the worst Carbon footprints in the world. This case study analyses, whether Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and woody bio mass help both generating more energy and reducing the countries Carbon emissions

During the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference, twelve “Nexus Solutions in Practice” sessions demonstrated how a Nexus perspective is already being applied through a series of practical solutions from around the world and at different levels of application. These sessions brought the Nexus to life, helped to keep the conference discussions on a practical level and inspired conference participants to move to concrete action following the conference.

On the Water, Energy & Food Security NEXUS Resource Platform, the collection of practical solutions has become a major section. New best practice examples will be included.

An increased focus on risk resilience and disclosure by companies of the disaster risks they face would create an environment where the private sector and governments can more effectively respond to climate change, Britain’s Prince of Wales said yesterday. Prince Charles was speaking on Wednesday in London at the International Insurance Society’s 50th Annual Seminar, an event that is being held in conjunction with the United Nations Financial and Private Sector Disaster Resilience Global Summit. Advances in climate science and big data make it easier for organisations to assess their risks. “A comprehensive understanding of risk, including the risks of climate change, the food-water-energy nexus and resource scarcity is now increasingly straightforward,” Prince Charles said.

Debates about the food-energy-water nexus need to recognise that global priorities may not reflect local concerns, and resource allocations are always political. By Jeremy Allouche, research fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, member of the ESRC STEPS Centre and co-author of Nexus Nirvana or Nexus Nullity?, a STEPS Centre working paper.

By Eckart Woertz. Nowhere else the nexus is as evident as in dry lands and in the MENA region in particular. Energy will be required to pump, treat and desalinate water for domestic and agricultural purposes. Water will be required to produce energy. About 1-2 percent of global energy consumption can be attributed to the production of nitrogen fertilizer alone. Such development challenges call for a nexus approach to broaden the analysis from a mere ‘blue water’ focus to the more efficient use of soil moisture (“green water”) and sustainable policy options.
